To discuss the role of music in Latin and Caribbean cultures and the impact of these cultures on music. To present a historical survey to the evolution and development of musical styles from rumba to reggae. Among the topics, and to include: origins, gender, race, ethnicity, politics, elements of music, instruments, both sacred and secular music, and significant individuals influencing the evolution of many different genres of music in Latin America and Caribbean cultures. Exploration of selected topics in music. Focuses on a theme, era, genre, concept, or critical approach. Analysis and interpretation of topic's representation, development, and significance in a variety subjects related to music humanities. Includes reading, listening analysis and interpretation of music and musical texts. Prerequisites: A grade of C or better in ENG101 or ENG107, or permission of Instructor. Course Notes: MHL295 may be repeated for a total of nine (9) credit hours.
